The Seward Highway

It won't be hard to tell, but this is my favorite place in Alaska so far.

The drive to Seward from Anchorage is full of stunning views.  It is known as one of the most beautiful drives in the United States and there is something spectacular to see around every bend. You will see hanging glaciers, fjords, snow capped mountains, and plenty of wildlife, especially sea birds. Marine animals abound since the drive follows along Resurrection Bay with water on one side and mountains all around. Plan on extra time (a few hours) for this two and a half hour drive because there are many sights, pull offs, hiking trails and hidden gems along the way.  It took me about a half a day to drive the entire distance (125 miles).  Since I was alone on this trip during the off season, which means very few tourists, I wasn't able to enjoy any hikes but I stopped for plenty of photo opportunities.

This trip was a very special personal retreat for me and I will never forget it.  My adventure began in Anchorage and then I spent the first night at the fabulous Hotel Alyeska, a luxurious ski resort where I enjoyed the sauna, hot tub, and salt water pool.  Since I visited in October (known as the "shoulder season") I had the place mostly to myself. The next morning after a breakfast of reindeer sausage, I took the tram up the mountain for some spectacular views.  I have posted all of these photos here.. I highly recommend spending some time at Hotel Alyeska and take the tram to see some spectacular views!
My journey continued to Seward and I spent the night in a little area just north of town called Lowell Point. I stayed two nights in a private beach cabin right on Resurrection Bay. I had the beach all to myself.  The road to Lowell Point is an experience all in itself but it was totally worth it.  To see photos of this amazing area, go to the Seward/Lowell Point page..
For the best stopping points along the way, you can download a Seward Highway Road Guide. or The Milepost gives mile by mile list of points along the way..
I fell in love with Seward and I think I would live there if given the chance.
